Dealing with Disappointment

I’m learning this mindset, finally!

My husband was watching a segment of ‘Got to Dance’ , and there was this great dance act. Although right at the end they flopped their last move, they were technically good and the audience loved them but when the judges came to vote two out three dissed them. It upset my husband and it was hard not to think the show was rigged.

It made me think back to when I was a teen and the art competitions I used to enter but never even won a bronze. Eventually I got so disappointed with my failure that I simply stopped entering them. (It was all or nothing in my mind. Bad attitude) Why keep going back for more punishment.  I never tried to do what I thought the judges were looking for. I just did what I liked.  For a long time I allowed this to cloud my judgement about whether I was ‘worthy’ to consider myself an artist. This was  something that used to hold me back a lot.

If you struggle with those kind of feelings then I hope this short video gives you some perspective.  I’ll be exploring this subject again because artists have to deal with it frequently.
Please share in the comments how you deal with disappointment.

  1. I agree with all of my heart Reeva. I like Malcolm Gladwell’s thoughts on how are so called disadvantages are advantageous.

I love that you are you!

    1. Thank you! I have read some of his stuff about outliers. I liked it. There are so many things I wish I was taught at school and college but I am glad to be learning them now.
